چکیده

This paper presents a theory of inflation in an economy with commodity money and supports it by evidence from the inflationary episodes in France during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The paper shows that commodity money can be inflated similarly to fiat money through repeated debasements, which act like devaluation. Furthermore, as with fiat money, demand for commodity money falls with inflation. Unlike fiat money, at high rates of inflation the demand for commodity money becomes insensitive to inflation, since commodity money has intrinsic value in addition to transactions, and thus losses from inflation are bounded. Finally, we show that an anticipated stabilization reduces the demand for commodity money, which is opposite to the effect of an anticipated standard stabilization on the demand for fiat money. All the results of the model are supported by the data. JEL Classification: E31, N13

The Gold Standard: An Analysis of Some Recent Proposals

The case for a free-market commodity money as provided by a genuine gold standard is simple yet decisive. It is based on the insight that the root cause of inflation in the modern world is the almost absolute monopoly over the supply of money which all national governments possess within their respective political jurisdictions. That such an arrangement necessarily produces inflation is not dif...

Predictive Dynamics in Commodity Prices

Using a sample of commodity spot price indexes over the period 1947-2010, we examine predictability of commodity returns at the monthly, quarterly, and annual horizons. We establish out-of-sample predictability by means of variables such as bond spreads, growth in money supply and industrial production. Predictability is strongest for raw industrials and metals indexes and weakest for foods and...

Inflationary equilibrium in a stochastic economy with independent agents

We argue that even when macroeconomic variables are constant, underlying microeconomic uncertainty and borrowing constraints generate inflation. We study stochastic economies with fiat money, a central bank, one nondurable commodity, countably many time periods, and a continuum of agents. The aggregate amount of the commodity remains constant, but the endowments of individual agents fluctuate “...
